Eye Safety

Just about everyone is at risk for eye injuries at home, around the yard and garage, and while playing sports. Of the nearly 2.5 million eye injuries that occur each year in the United States, almost half occur at home and about one-fourth occur during recreational activities, or on streets and highways. Ninety percent of these injuries can be prevented by employing eye safety measures and by using proper protective eyewear.
- Safety around the Home
Believe it or not, the average home is full of dangers that often go unnoticed. In fact, accidents involving common household products cause 125,000 eye injuries each year.
- Sports Eye Safety
More than 40,000 people a year suffer eye injuries while playing sports. For all age groups, sports-related eye injuries occur most frequently in baseball, basketball and racquet sports. Almost all sports-related eye injuries can be prevented. Whatever your game, whatever your age, you need to protect your eyes!
- Firework Safety
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, fireworks were involved in an estimated 10,800 injuries treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms in 2005. An estimated 6,500 injuries were treated in hospital emergency rooms during the one month period surrounding the Fourth of July.
- Toy Safety
Young children are often described as "accidents waiting to happen." Too often, accidents do occur and may result in eye injuries. In 2007, thousands of children age 14 and younger suffered serious eye injuries, even blindness, from toys.
